TOLEDO -- After the robbery and shooting of the manager of Famous Dave's on Monday, News 11's Colleen Wells interviewed Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn of Wood County on what to do if someone pulls a gun on you.
The surveillance video from Famous Dave's shows the manager walking to his car with a bank deposit in his hand. Within seconds of the manager shutting his car door, the hooded suspect appears out of nowhere, walks behind the car, pulls a gun, shoots the manager and then runs away.
Wasylyshyn theorizes about what perpetrated the crime.
"We have some serious issues with the price of gasoline and our economy is not the best it could be," said Wasylyshyn. "When that happens, crime goes up, and criminals get more brazen."
Wasylyshyn says robberies can happen to anyone at any time. Monday's crime took place in broad daylight on busy Monroe St., for example.
So what do you do if a gun is pulled on you?
"Most robbers just want your money or your jewelry, your belongings or your vehicle. They're not interested in turning it into a homicide, so you always give what they want, but don't go with them," Wasylyshyn says.
Monday's victim escaped his attacker and survived. Wasylyshyn says although you can't always get away, never go to another location with an armed robber. He also says when you're out and about, be aware of your surroundings. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
And in that situation, call the police.
