TOLEDO -- Toledo Police found a man near death this weekend. Now they need your help figuring out how he suffered his potentially fatal injuries.
Fifty-six-year-old Sherman Smith was found on the corner of Sterling and City Park Sunday morning. He's unconscious, and his family doesn't know if he'll ever wake up.
"It's devastating," says Smith's sister-in-law Denise Evans. "His mom is just real sad. He knew a lot of people. So, he'd walk and stop and chat, from one street to another. All in the area."
A call first came in 3:30 a.m. Sunday saying Smith was laying in the street unconscious. Five hours later, he was found down the street, sitting up against a pole.
Evans tells us Smith suffered severe trauma to the top of his skull and back of his brain.
"He was either bludgeoned or he fell," says Toledo Police Detective Denise Muszynski.
Doctors told the family if he recovers, Smith could be severely brain damaged.
The family and police are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
