WTOL Editorial: City of Toledo, clean up your act!

Garbage is a hot topic in town. Here's what's going on. The trash collection fee in Toledo must be resolved by May 1. That's the end date for the current fee structure. Right now, the monthly fee is $3 if you recycle and $5.50 if you don't.

The Mayor would like this fee structure to continue until 2010.

Councilman Michael Collins has proposed a monthly $10 fee if you don't recycle and no fee if you do recycle. This plan would be phased in over time -- if it is adopted.

There are also issues with the trucks and labor. This May, test routes are planned for one-man automated trucks. These trucks are expensive but pay for themselves over time. The manpower to collect the garbage would drop from 3 workers per truck to 1.

As you can imagine, City Council is hearing from a lot of people about garbage. That's good. It's your money. This is your opportunity to tell them which option makes the most sense for you.
