ERIE, Mich. --  The Silver Blue Motel in the 8200 block of S. Telegraph Rd. in Erie, Mich. was gutted by fire Friday.

Firefighters had trouble fighting the blaze because there were no hydrants in the area.

One person, the owner of the hotel, was injured trying to put out the flames and was taken to a nearby hospital. Ram Singh is in fair condition at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The motel had been closed for 3-4 weeks and was set to reopen Friday. News 11 has learned the owner was trying to turn on a heater when the fire may have started. The fire began in the back of the building and spread to the roof.

Investigators say it is not considered a suspicious fire. Singh, along with his wife Rekha and 19-month old daughter are now without a business and without a home since they lived in the hotel as well.

Fire departments from Ida, Whiteford, Bedford, Morin Point, Luna Pier and LaSalle were on the scene.
