TOLEDO -- It's a big day for a major project in downtown Toledo -- groundbreaking for the arena project.
Up until this point, the arena project has been all about planning and preparing. Today marks the day where it switches over to the building phase, moving forward with the construction of an 8,000 seat, multi-purpose arena.
Last week, crews were wrapping up on the demolition of buildings, to clear the way for the arena footprint. It's been a non-stop parade of dump trucks hauling debris out of the site. While the local dignitaries will be digging with those ceremonial shovels today, the excavation phase of the project is expected to begin this week. That's where crews will dig down around 12 feet and put in premium fill, to give the arena a solid base to sit on. The plan is to have foundation work to begin by the end of the year.
