DOWNTOWN TOLEDO -- Lucas County Commissioners have finally unveiled the plans to put a new arena at the corner of Jefferson and Superior in downtown Toledo. After months of community input, architects created a design featuring glass, brick, and concrete.
Leaders say those materials were chosen because they allow local workers to build the arena. Crews are already tearing down several buildings that sit on the arena site. "This is a building that will have events in it 180 days a year," said Ray Michan, the architect who designed the building. "Almost every other day there will be a concert or a hockey game or an arena football game to bring people downtown, or keep people downtown after work."
The plans also call for an environmentally-friendly building, or "green" arena. The construction, materials, and design will all be friendly to the environment. Lucas County leaders say it's one of the first of its kind in America.
The new arena is scheduled to be open in 2009.
