Ground-Breaking Announced for Bass Pro Shops in Rossford

WOOD COUNTY -- It's the day a lot of people, especially fishing fans, have been waiting for.  Rossford city officials tell News 11 the official ground-breaking for the new Bass Pro Shops store at the Crossroads of America development will happen on August 22nd.

The development will go at the intersection of Interstate 75 and the Ohio Turnpike in Wood County.  Right now, crews are there doing the site work to get ready for the groundbreaking.  "They're installing some storm water retention ponds and getting the building pad down," said Ed Ciecka, the Rossford city administrator.  "We anticipate that they will be starting actually on the building within the next 30 days."

Bass Pro will spend about $50 million dollars to build the store and ultimately it will hire 300 people to work there.  The store is expected to have fishing and hunting equipment, and equipment and clothing for hiking, backpacking, wildlife viewing, camping, outdoor cooking and more.  The company also plans a gift and nature center to serve up a wide variety of outdoor-related items from lamps and dishes to bird feeders and furniture.

The store may also include the Islamorada Fish Company restaurant, which is a common pairing for Bass Pro Shops.

For a local landscaping crew doing work near the site, they can't wait to go shopping.  "We go on a fishing trip every year.  We like to hunt," said John Kontak, a worker.  "We like to fish, lot of guys on the crew are the same way and we're outdoor guys.  This really works out."

While the future Bass Pro Shop is also expected to attract other development, some people see new hope for an old project sitting idle in the Crossroads area.  "They had the amphitheater they were going to put up," said Pat Critch, a Rossford resident.  "I think that's still alive.  I think it's still going to happen, and there's a lot of land around it they can develop."

The goal is to have the Bass Pro store open sometime next summer.

According to a news release from the company, Bass Pro Shops is headquartered in Springfield, Missouri. They currently have 58 retail locations either open, announced or under construction 23 states and Canada.  The company is also known as an Internet retailer.
