WTOL Editorial: Ax the Parental Accountability Act

Carty, you have got to be kidding.

Holding parents legally responsible for the crimes of their children -- dumb, reckless and wrong.

Yes, juvenile crime is up in Toledo.

We've seen almost a 4 percent increase in new charges filed in juvenile court from 2005 to 2006.

And that's 13 percent over 2004.

Last week's tragedy. We don't want it to happen again.

But, mayor, punishing parents for the actions of their errant children -- not the answer.

First of all, our educational and legal systems have, for decades, wedged themselves between parents and their kids.

Allowing minors to have abortions without their parents' consent is just one example.

How can government expect parents to control their children while at the same time undermining them?

It's not going to work.

Stronger families, a healthy work and personal ethic, opportunities for work and hope for the future. These are things kids need.

Not the government scaring the hell out of their parents.

I'm Bob Chirdon and I say holding parents legally responsible for their children's crimes is wrong.

What do you think?
