Toledo Police receive new grant for special victims unit

The money will purchase a variety of technological equipment for conducting sensitive investigations.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The Toledo Police Department has received a new grant that will help them purchase some needed equipment.

They will use the nearly $12,000 grant for Toledo Police's Special Victims Unit. The money will purchase a variety of technological equipment for conducting sensitive investigations.

The Office of Criminal Justice Services awarded Toledo Police with $11,955.32. The grant requires a local match from the City of Toledo for the same amount.

If City Council approves the grant, their match will be used for personnel salaries. The grant money will buy flash drives, digital cameras, audio recorders, and other technology. It will assist detectives with being more mobile during sensitive investigations dealing with victims of rape and other violence.

"The detectives can go out to the scenes, be a little more mobile, talk to some of the victims at their homes or places they feel safer rather than having to have them come down to a police station where they may not be as comfortable--because we're dealing with people who've gone through a lot of trauma here," said Toledo Police Captain Joe Heffernan.

Toledo Police said they're thankful when they are offered a grant like this, because it allows them to not rely so heavily on taxpayer money.

City Council is expected to vote on the acceptance of these funds next week.
