UT Police ready for big crowds at Saturday’s Miami Hurricanes game

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The Toledo Rockets are taking on the 21st ranked University of Miami Hurricanes on Saturday at the Glass Bowl.

More than 30 thousand fans are expected to be on campus for the game and tailgating.

Students on campus are noticing an increase in excitement as game day approaches.

"People are getting really amped up for the game, a lot of people are talking about going, everyone is going," said student Carter Friedt.

Student Michael Chiu agrees.

"Tailgating starting, yeah, everybody is going to get pumped, and get ready for the game," said Chiu.

Students say more families are coming to visit, .and they are excited for the energy on campus.

But, with huge crowds, comes more safety concerns.

"The tailgating, the game itself, really, no stone left unturned," said University of Toledo Police Jeff Newton.

Chief Newton says UT police will be accompanied by Ohio Homeland Security, Toledo Police and the Lucas County Sherriff's Department on campus.

He admits a lot more meeting and planning went into this game along with bringing on extra staff.

"We are expecting a capacity crowd so when you have that many people on campus it can bring some unique challenges but we've had big games before so we feel like we are really well prepared," said Jeff.

Kick off is at noon but, Newton suggests getting there much earlier than that.

"It makes it more difficult if everyone tries to arrive at the game 15 minutes before kickoff so our recommendation is get here early there is some construction on Bancroft. We'll be ready to park cars and get everyone in as quickly as possible."

In addition, UT leaders encourage you to review any info on your tickets before you head to the game.
