Toledo's 2018 homicide rate on pace to surpass 2017 numbers

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The number of murders in Toledo continues to rise.

The death of a man on Thursday who was shot on Emerald Street in south Toledo on Wednesday marked the 32nd homicide in the city in 2018.

At this rate, the number of homicides this year is set to surpass 2017 numbers.

There were 39 homicides in 2017.

Toledo Police have solved just over half of this year's murders.

2018 homicides include two officer involved shootings and a justified shooting.

The justified shooting involved a man who was assaulting a woman with a hatchet.

Currently TPD is investigating 15 murders.

In 2017, they solved a total of twenty-four, leaving fifteen unsolved.

Toledo Police can't stop murders from happening.

But they say studying crime trends and predicting crime patterns can help to prevent violence.
