Bowling Green High School cuts hockey program for upcoming season

The athletic department plans to have a team again in 2020.

BOWLING GREEN, OH (WTOL) - For the first time since 1978 Bowling Green High School will not have a hockey team.

Athletic department leaders said the decision was tough because hockey is the most decorated athletic program in the school. The athletic department added that the decision came down to the fact that there were only eight players committed to the team this season.

"It's something that we knew was a possibility coming in and just with the numbers being what they were especially with the amount of young kids that were going to compose the team we possibly could've had, it just wasn't the right decision to make," said Bowling Green High School Athletic Director, Dirk Conner.

The students who were going to be on this year's hockey team will still have support from the school.

"We're also still going to have open skates and things of that nature where the kids that are still committed to playing hockey for us are going to be together during this winter just not necessarily for bowling green high school hockey," said Conner.
