MAUMEE, OH (WTOL) - Lawyers are investigating a possible misappropriation of funds in the city of Maumee.

The City Administrator, confirmed that $50,000 has been approved to hire an independent legal firm to investigate.

At the end of Monday's council meeting, an attendee said Councilman John Boellner brought the action forward to the surprise of the Mayor and some council members.

City Administrator John Jezack said  under legal council, they can make no further comment, but sent WTOL 11 the statement below:

In July 2018, representatives of the City of Maumee inquired whether the City's outside counsel, Squire Patton Boggs, could conduct an independent review of certain concerns that have been raised related to City Officials and/or employees.  Per the passage of authorizing legislation on August 6, 2018, Squire Patton Boggs has been engaged by the City and will commence its independent review of these concerns.  To protect the integrity and independence of the process, it is the City's policy not to comment on the nature or scope of the concerns raised or the on-going review. Upon completion of the compliance review, Squire Patton Boggs will report its findings to the City.
