TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A Toledo group is calling for a Lake Erie Bill of Rights.

On Monday, the group Toledoans for Safe Water will submit petitions with just over 100-thousand signatures to the Lucas County Board of Elections  to place an issue before voters on the November ballot.

The group says if it is passed the initiative would enshrine in the Toledo City Charter that the Lake Erie watershed and ecosystem have legal rights, including the right to exist and flourish and would allow polluters of the lake to be held accountable in court.

"We as Toledoans were frustrated with the lack of progress with the state government. We wanted to take advantage of our home rule in the constitution to self governance. This is important to the citizens of Toledo and this is how Toledoans will fight back," said Sean Nestor, with the group.

Nestor says the amendment will keep the lake clean and safe.
