Parents say back to school shopping causes stress on families

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - While many of you might enjoy shopping, back to school shopping is another story.

75% of parents say it's the most stressful time of the year and tends to cause tension between family members.

Parents spend hundreds of dollars on all the different school supplies and school fees like physicals and sports.

"It's over $400 to $600 per child, and if you have more than 1 child and they're involved in sports that can cause a lot of burden and stress, so planning is key to the success of the back to school transition," said Dr. Victoria Kelly with The University of Toledo Medical Center.

Some complaints kids have about back to school shopping is that their parents wait until the last minute to go shopping, and only buy the budget item instead of name brand.

Parents complaints are that their children want those name brand items and want to make too many impulse purchases.

Dr. Kelly said there are more than just financial issues about back to school. Parents also stress about their kids having academic and social success.

She says now is the time to sit them down to talk about important issues and make sure they know you are a safe space for them to open up about anything.

"It is never too late to plan, obviously. The sooner you do it, the better, as long as you have a plan it will make you feel less anxious as a parents that you are doing everything you can as a parent. Think about all the responsibilities a child has and what you can do for each of those to help get them be the best person and little child that they can be," Dr. Kelly said.
