"Ready for the Race" is a women's only training program created to prepare for the annual Toledo event.
The six-week training program begins with a "Nutrition Guidelines for Runners" event, hosted by Mercy Health Clinical Dietician, Kristen McDougle.
When exercising and training to physically compete, proper nutrition allows runners to build endurance and perform at the best of their ability.
Correct calorie intake, types of food eaten, and time of consumption are all important factors to help runners prepare.
When running short distances, calorie needs are not much higher than that of non-runners. It is not necessary to consume high amounts of carbohydrates before the race, nor are large meals needed after the race.
The following nutrition tips are recommended to ensure your body is "Ready for the Race:"
- Eat a high-carb, moderate-fat, low-protein snack less than an hour prior to the race
- Hydrate: consume 20 oz. water two hours prior to the race, 10 0z. water 10 minutes prior to the race, and rehydrate after the race with 24 oz. of fluid
- Replenish with a light snack after crossing the finish line
Proper nutrition not only allows runners to compete, but also helps improve other areas of health, such as lowering the risk of cancer.
For Americans who don't use tobacco, the most important preventative measures a person could take to reduce cancer risks include obtaining a healthy weight, consuming a healthy diet, and incorporating physical activity into a lifestyle.
"When our bodies are missing key nutrients, they are unable to perform most effectively. Nutrition is a key player in maximizing performance, recovery, and progress for training in all aspects of fitness and overall wellness," said Kristen McDougle, Mercy Health Clinical Dietician.
"Ready for the Race" will provide multiple group training opportunities and chances to connect with like-minded individuals leading up to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Featuring knowledgeable coaches and fun events, this women's only training program will get you to the start line on race day.
Women of the community are invited and encouraged to attend this free nutrition event as part of the "Ready for the Race" training program.
"Nutrition Guidelines for Runners" will take place at the Dave's Running Perrysburg location, at 26567 N. Dixie Hwy., on Thursday, August 2 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
