New pickleball courts are now open in Findlay

Anyone interested in the new and growing sport can learn how to play by stopping by the Recreation Department's "Keep Active" program Thursday. It starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

FINDLAY, OH (WTOL) - The new pickleball courts in Findlay are are now open at Riverside Park.

Pickleball is a sport that's sweeping the country, and Findlay is one of the growing number of communities jumping on the pickleball bandwagon.

Pickleball is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping pong, and anyone can play it.

"It's really easy to get the hang of. You usually play double, so it's not a lot of running. Fun and easy to do," said Greta Schrock.

Greta's husband Dick echoes those sentiments.

"It's nice because you don't have to be that young, and it's just a good sport. Lots of activity and very social," said Dick Schrock.

It's also an inexpensive sport.

The new court officially opened Thursday night and is one of 12,000 in the United States.

The city of Findlay built it at a cost of $50,000.

The new courts are made possible by a Challenge grant of $24,000 given by AARP Community Challenge.

"What we've done is re-purpose an old tennis court that was underutilized. Now, it's a place where the growing sport of pickleball can be played in the Flag City," said Findlay mayor Lydia Mihalik.

It will also be the home court for the Flag City Pickleball Club and anyone else who wants to use it.

Club members say all you have to do is show up with your paddle and ball and play.
