Sylvania schools proposes new levy to update security measures

The Sylvania School District is proposing a new levy that would update security measures in all schools, and you could potentially see it on the November ballot.

SYLVANIA, OH (WTOL) - The Sylvania school district is proposing a new levy that would update security measures in all schools, and you could potentially see it on the November ballot.

"It would be you know a great thing to support the schools and all the kids that go to school to keep them safe," Sarah Marshall, a Sylvania parent.

This decision stems from the amendment to House Bill 24 that was passed in March.  It allows schools to place a special safety and security levy on the ballot.

"We're definitely being cautious with that so can it be an amount that they can afford. That they think is worth while for their family to pay for to be able to help the safety and security of their kids. The number one priority is making sure their kids are safe," said Adam Fineske, Sylvania School's superintendent.

If Sylvania's proposal is passed, some of the new measures include increasing law enforcement and adding mental health counselors.

They would also install new cameras and a visitor identity system.

Talks began last March at a school safety forum with parents to discuss what more they can do.

"They sat us down and kind of explained how it all worked and the one question I had was, how do we get more officers in every school and now that this is happening is really cool," said another Sylvania parent, Sara Charles.

The Sylvania School Board of Education will discuss the proposal on Monday.
