LEELANAU COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Officials are warning drivers to keep their eyes peeled after a young female black bear was hit and killed by a car in Northern Michigan.

Leelanau County Road Commission posted a photo of the bear on their Facebook page. They said the crash happened on M-22 near Basch Road, in an area where there is a curve.

“Picking up any animal that has been killed is never something we want to do,” the department wrote on Facebook.

The commission said this isn’t the first time a bear has been hit in the area. A bear was hit last year about three miles from the latest collision.

“Animals navigate where they so choose,” the department wrote. “Please slow down a bit and keep your eyes peeled for anything that may dart into your lane.

The driver of the vehicle was not hurt in the crash, the department said.
