Money Talks News - Everybody thinks they're a good shopper. After all, nobody goes to the store and spends more than they have to.

But if that's the case, why are there shelves packed with name brands that cost 20 to 30 percent more than their generic or store brand cousins? Often for identical products.

Example? Over the counter medications. Look at some labels: you might find your store brand has the exact same ingredients as your name brand but the name brand costs $9.69 and the store brand is 46.99.

The baking section is full examples. Flour, Salt, Sugar. it. Same goes for spices.

And things aren't any different with cleaning products.

Sometimes fruits and vegetables can have names attached that can make them more expensive. And after all, there isn't a secret formula here for things such as bananas.

Water is also a classic example.

You're already paying for something you could be getting virtually free as close as the nearest faucet. Why would you pay extra for a name brand?

How about the dairy case? Butter, milk. You know, there's not too many ways to squeeze milk from a cow. How can a name brand be better?

Does that mean you should never buy a name brand? Of course not. Sometimes name brands are definitely better and definitely worth the extra money. But when they're not, don't spend it.
