FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Two Flint police officers rescued a trapped baby raccoon on Tuesday.

Officers Reed and Hilliker responded to a call about a strange screaming noise when they found the baby trapped in a barrel full of sludge.

The raccoon was running out of energy and nearly drowning, the police department said.

Hilliker kicked over the barrel to free the cub, but it just laid on the ground too exhausted to move, the department said.

The officers, with the help of a concerned neighbor, were able to clean the baby with a hose and dry him off with a towel.

Police contacted a local animal rescue for further care.
