73-year-old Mich. man dies in crash in Williams County

The Defiance Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened Monday morning in Williams County. WILLIAMS COUNTY, OH (WTOL) - The Defiance Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened Monday morning in Williams County.

According to the patrol, a 2012 GMC Savanna cargo van driven by William F. Rapes, 73, of Pittsford, Michigan, was traveling northbound on County Road 22A in Springfield Township. Just before 10 a.m, Pitts apparently failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of CR22A and U.S. 6 and struck a westbound 2007 International semi-trailer driven by Victor Schmucker, 38, of Spencerville, Indiana.

Rapes was pronounced dead at the scene by the Williams County Coroner's Office. Schmucker was transported by Springfield Township Fire and EMS to Bryan Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Schmucker was wearing a safety belt. Rapes was not.

Assistance at the scene was provided by Williams County Sheriff's Office, Springfield Township Fire and ODOT.

The crash remains under investigation by the Defiance Post of the OSHP.
