A 5-year-old boy who became lost in northern Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was rescued after the Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to search for the youngster.

WPBN-TV reports the boy with autism was reported missing to the National Parks Service by his parents Friday evening.

The parks service asked the Coast Guard to help search for the boy with a helicopter and the aircraft's crew began the search about 8:30 p.m.

Coast Guard helicopter pilot Lt. Chris Gurnsey says the boy was found about 9 p.m., just before sunset, playing in the sand near a dune trail near Lake Michigan's coast.

The crew lowered a rescuer, who stayed with the boy until a fire crew arrived to take the boy back to his parents.
