TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The safety of animals and visitors at the Toledo Zoo is a top priority for workers, as the heat wave rolls in.

The animals have been moving just a little bit slower this weekend.

Many are catching extra naps under the shade canopies - while others are taking a dip in the pond.

Baby pools, piles of ice and misters have also been added to the exhibits.

Afterward, animals can come inside to the air conditioning.

"Most of them are able to deal with it. They have adapted to it. We just try to make it more comfortable for them," said David Ross with the zoo.

And besides the animals - the zoo is looking out for humans as well.

The splash pad is sure to be one of the busiest attractions over the hot weekend.

On Saturday, the zoo is offering free admission for everyone between 2 and 5 p.m.

Parking fees however will still apply.
