From now until August 10, City of Toledo leaders are offering a free, fun way for local kids to spend their summer.

This is the fourth year the city is putting on this Summer Recreation at the Park programming in hopes of engaging the youth.

"It is a great deterrent of juvenile delinquency, being proactive and prevention in making sure our young people know they have a place to go. And not just a place to go, it's free, the meals are provided by Connect the kids to meals and Village on Adams," said Alicia Smith, the City of Toledo's Manager of Recreation.

This is happening at Ottawa, Walbridge, Wilson, Savage, Westwood and Friendship Park, as well as the Believe Center.

City leaders are hosting kids from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every week day.

This is for kids ages 6-15 years old.

Colleges students, who have been trained, are working with the kids.

The program has everything from fun activities to career development and technology.

All of the directors have been trained in CPR and First Aid, and have had an FBI/BCI background check.

"We want to make sure the children have not just a safe summer, but a fun summer. With our pools opening, activities and recreation, teaching them some things too," said Smith.

Parents can sign them up on site, and just have to be there at the end of the day to pick them up.

The kids can come whenever throughout the week, and leave as needed.

"It is us learning together, without being connected we have nothing, and this is a great connection, in our parks for our children," Smith said.

The children do not need to be residents of Toledo.

Smith said that she is open to suggestions if parents think something should be added to the programming.
