ROSSFORD, OH (WTOL) - There's new warning residents in Rossford should know about.
Rossford Police say crooks are trying to cash in, all in the name of firefighters.
If you get a call asking for a donation to the Rossford Firefighters Association, police say you should hang up and call them because it is a scam.
Police are unsure how many people received such a call from con-artists and they are still unsure about how much money victims donated.
"It's very disheartening because as a community we are having a rough time trying to keep ourselves funded to provide service to the citizens, so when you have someone upsetting that proverbial applecart because it could potentially tarnish our image as a whole," explained Chief Josh Drouard with the Rossford Fire Department.
Rossford firefighters raise money through face-to-face fundraisers like their pancake breakfast and would never call asking money over the phone.
And unfortunately this is not the only community getting hit by this type of scam. If you get a call similar to the ones described and you don't live in Rossford, you are still advised to not donate. You are encouraged to call your fire department to verify if it is legitimate.
