Local mom motivated to organize immigration march

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to end the process of separating children from families after they are detained crossing the border illegally.

"We have to be very strong on the border. But at the same time we want to be very compassionate," said President Donald Trump, addressing the media during discussions with Congressional lawmakers, Wednesday.

The Administration had previously said the only way to end the practice is for Congress to pass new legislation.

The issue reached a fever pitch the last few days as images of children locked up and screaming for their parents emerged. It was enough for one local mom to get involved.

For someone who doesn't consider herself as politically active, Ottawa Hill mom, Jessica Mallett said  the separation of children from their families at the border turned human for her.

"I saw children who were my son's age in cages, in things that look like dog kennels and I can't imagine any parent seeing their baby in something that looks like a dog kennel," said Mallett.

So Mallett decided to do something. She's helping to organize a local march to coincide with a national march happening in Washington D.C., later this month.

"Raise awareness about immigration issues in the United States and about amnesty seeking and about what we can do in our own backyard," said Mallett.

Mallett says she's happy the President signed the executive order and hopes the move is from the heart. Now, she's hoping for balanced immigration reform.

"We need change and we can do that," she said.

The march will be in Uptown Toledo at the "Love" wall at Adams and 13th Streets on June 30 at 11 a.m.
