(CNN) - A former FBI special agent who quit recently said he resigned so he could express his concerns over politicization of the agency.

Former FBI special agent Josh Campbell spoke to CNN on Monday about his concerns. It comes amid increased Republican scrutiny of the Justice Department and the FBI in their handling of the Russia investigation.

"If you ask the men and women of the FBI what the last year and a half has been like, I think they would say - to a person - they would say either perplexing, sometimes angering, when you see the political attacks on the FBI," Campbell said.

A Republican-authored memo criticizing the bureau and the department was released Friday.

According to the memo, the FBI and DOJ improperly used information paid for in part by the Clinton campaign to get a FISA warrant for a Trump campaign adviser. Democrats said the memo is misleading, politically motivated, and that it is meant to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

"I'm not talking about criticism. I want to make that point clear," Campbell said. "Criticism of the FBI is needed. We have to have oversight. We cannot police ourselves. What myself and my colleagues have been concerned about are the political attacks. The attacks that go beyond process and more - some other motive behind them, and my concern was the long-term effects on the organization."

Campbell was announced Monday as a CNN law enforcement analyst. He served as a special assistant to former FBI director James Comey, who Trump fired last year.
