6 sent to hospital in Winton Hills crash, baby seriously injured - News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Police are investigating after a baby was seriously injured in a crash in Winton Hills Thursday night.

The accident happened on Dutch Colony Rd. in Winton Terrace.

Police said six people in total were in the car when it slammed into a tree - three adults and three children. All were taken to the hospital with injuries.

According to police, 22-year-old Demarkous Martin failed to control his vehicle while turning onto Dutch Colony Road.

He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries, and is listed in stable condition.

"Vehicle coming southbound on Winton Ridge Road, turned left on Dutch Colony failed to maintain control. They left the roadway and struck a tree," Sgt. Michael Hudepohl said. 

Hope Bridgett, 21, had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with minor injuries, and is listed in stable condition.

Faith Bridgett, 24, was transported to Children's Hospital with serious injuries and is in stable condition. 

Three rear seat passengers, a 7-year-old boy, 2-year-old girl, and 6-month-old baby girl were all transported to Children’s Hospital. Two are in stable condition, but the baby suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition.

A woman said when she held the baby in her hands she was not breathing.

"I ran outside and I screamed 'are you OK,' and I went around and tried to open the passenger door and it would not open, so I went around to the drivers side and he was on the ground rolling around," Christina Kelly said. 

She said the two kids got out of the car first followed by a woman holding a baby. Kelly said she then took the 6-month-old.

She said when she held the baby in her hands she was not breathing.

"My main instinct was to grab the baby. And then I was like the baby isn't making any noise. Then I patted the babies chest and I looked and I started screaming 'oh my God, the baby is not moving.' The lady that was trapped in the car was pregnant," Kelly said. 

Police said no one in the vehicle were wearing seat belts, and the baby was not restrained.

"There was a car seat in the vehicle but the information is the 6-month-old was not in the car seat," Hudepohl said. 

Excessive speed does not appear to be a factor in this crash.

Impairment is unknown at this time.    

The Traffic Unit is continuing the investigation and any witnesses to this crash are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
