HARTWELL, OH (FOX19) -

Authorities are searching for a man wanted in an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon.

Ronald Foster fled on foot after firing at a Springfield Township police officer, according to Lt. Chris Niehaus.

The confrontation started around 1:30 p.m. after police stopped Foster for a traffic violation. Foster parked his Jeep Cherokee in the Kroger parking lot at 8241 Vine Street.

Foster then exited his vehicle, produced a firearm and shot at the officer, police said.

The officer returned fire and Foster fled the scene. The suspect was last seen running into a wooded area near the rear of the store.

The officer, who has not been identified, was not injured.

Foster is wanted for felonious assault, police say.

The investigation prompted a heavy police presence at a home at the intersection of Van Kirk Avenue and 68th street - about 1.5 miles away from Kroger.

It is not clear why authorities surrounded that home.

Kroger was placed on lockdown during the shooting. Customers were eventually permitted to leave, but the store remained closed for several hours. It has since reopened.

Anyone with information on the incident or the location of Mr. Foster is urged to call the Springfield Township Police Department at (513) 729-1300 or Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.
