CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Welcome to hay fever season.

Allergy sufferers beware - ragweed is ready to begin emerging in southwest Ohio.

The Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency is finding ragweed in its daily pollen and mold counts.

Ragweed is a summer annual that is found throughout the United States and produces abundant pollen, a primary cause of hay fever.

The ragweed plant emerges throughout the U.S. each year, starting mid-August and can persist until the first heavy frost.

It produces billions of pollen grains which are spread throughout the region with the help of the wind. Ragweed flourishes along riverbanks, in abandoned lots, and in unattended fields.

Allergy sufferers may consider the following tips to help manage their symptoms:

  • Minimize outdoor activity between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. when pollen levels are the highest.
  • Close windows and use an air conditioner to reduce allergens entering the home.
  • Avoid activities such as raking leaves, mowing the lawn, and working with compost when feeling reactive.
  • Consult with a health care provider.
