Exercising too much can be deadly

(CNN) - If you work out obsessively or when you're sick, that might be a sign of a deeper problem, a mark of addiction to exercise. 

Exercise addiction is not included in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. But experts say it can lead to some serious health issues.

A study published in the British Medical Journal examined the condition and determined that up one half a percent of the population worldwide has it. That adds up to hundreds of thousands of individuals.

Symptoms can be difficult to spot, but some of the signs include:

  • Exercising several times a day.
  • Joining multiple gyms.
  • Exercising despite an an illness or an injury.
  • Experiencing withdrawal-like symptoms when you can't work out.

The health risks range from dehydration and anemia to  overuse injuries to immune system damage.

Exercise addiction can lead to death if the sufferer also has an eating disorder.

The study recommends therapy that follows the principles of addiction treatment, like cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise reprogramming.
