(CNN) - Former astronaut and American icon John Glenn will be laid to rest Thursday.

Glenn, who died in December at age 95, will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery after a private family service.

Thousands paid their respects to Glenn when he laid in state at the Ohio Statehouse for two days.

After the service, NASA is streaming the graveside processional and service, starting at 9:40 a.m. ET.

President Donald Trump ordered flags at all federal sites to be flown at half-staff to honor Glenn.

Glenn quit college after the attack on Pearl Harbor and enlisted as a U.S. Navy aviation cadet. He also served in the Korean war.

The Marine fighter pilot was the first American to orbit Earth, doing so in 1962.

While still a U.S. Senator, he later became the oldest human in space, serving on Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998 at age 77.

Glenn also represented Ohio in the U.S. senate for 24 years and sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984.
