BRANDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A man facing charges after a sheriff's deputy in Michigan was struck and killed by his car had earlier told authorities that he was "God." Lapeer County Sheriff Scott McKenna told reporters Friday the man made the statement late Wednesday night in the jail lobby. Lapeer deputies pursued the man's car into Oakland County where deputy Eric Overall was struck after laying down "stop sticks" to deflate the man's tires.

BRANDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says a public visitation and funeral are planned for a deputy killed when he was struck by a vehicle being pursued by police. The visitation will be held 3-8 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Church, 4900 Maybee Rd., in Independence Township. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

INKSTER, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan appeals court has affirmed the conviction of a Detroit-area police officer whose bloody beating of a motorist was recorded on dash-cam video and led to a $1.4 million settlement. The decision this week comes months after William Melendez was released from prison. In 2015, Melendez pulled Floyd Dent from his car in Inkster and punched him in the head 16 times. Dent suffered broken ribs, blood on the brain and other injuries.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan fountain that features a European settler with a weapon in his hand towering over a Native American has been vandalized with what appeared to be red paint. The substance was poured onto the settler and something resembling a hatchet was thrust into the top of the Fountain of the Pioneers in Kalamazoo's Bronson Park. City workers discovered the vandalism Friday morning. A hose and water were used to wash the substance off.
