COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Parliamentarians are having their day at the Ohio Statehouse with Republican House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger's resignation last month creating a historic mid-session vacancy. Speaker Pro Tempore Kirk Schuring is handling daily operations, but Schuring's leadership role only goes so far. House rules and parliamentary procedures don't allow the speaker pro tempore to ascend to the speakership, and bills can't be passed until the 99-member House elects a new speaker.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's congressional Democrats are urging Republican Gov. John Kasich to rescind a proposal for carrying out work requirements for Medicaid expansion recipients. In their letter Thursday, U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan, Marcy Kaptur, Marcia Fudge and Joyce Beatty questioned "the very rationale" of a Medicaid waiver Ohio submitted to the federal government May 1. It details Ohio's plan for imposing a work and community engagement requirement lawmakers passed last summer.

CLEVELAND (AP) - A man who crashed his car on a Cleveland interstate, attacked people who stopped to help and was killed by a sheriff's deputy has been described as a prominent businessman. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says 33-year-old Brett Luengo died Thursday from a gunshot wound to the chest. Sheriff county Sheriff's Office says the deputy open fired when Luengo lunged at him.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A serial arsonist convicted of causing the massive blaze that gutted a central Ohio thrift store warehouse has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Columbus Dispatch reports 33-year-old Aaron Callicoat was sentenced Thursday for his role in the Columbus Volunteers of America warehouse fire last year and other fires. A judge told Callicoat that a long prison sentence is the only way to protect the public from harm.
