COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Republican Gov. John Kasich is creating a statewide center to advance Ohio's efforts to become a national leader in autonomous vehicle research and smart road technology. An order signed Thursday establishes DriveOhio to coordinate state efforts and to hear regularly from government leaders and experts. Kasich's action comes a day after he pitched the idea at the Detroit Auto Show.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The family of an unarmed man fatally shot by an Ohio police officer in front of his girlfriend and their three children has sued the officer and the city employing him. The estate of Roy Evans Jr. claimed in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday that Strongsville police supervisors at the scene along Interstate 71 in Medina County failed to stop officer Jason Miller from rushing toward Evans' immobilized van and opening fire in March 2017. Messages were left with Strongsville's law director Thursday.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio municipal court judge facing federal fraud charges from her work as a private attorney has pleaded not guilty at a hearing where she had been expected to plead guilty. The Vindicator reports Mahoning County Court Judge Diane Vettori-Caraballo conferred in court with her attorneys Wednesday before pleading not guilty to charges in the theft of nearly $100,000 from the home of a dead woman whose estate she represented. An attorney for Vettori-Caraballo declined to comment Thursday.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Kent State University is denying a request to allow white nationalist Richard Spencer to speak on campus this spring on the day marking the anniversary of the Ohio National Guard shootings. Spencer's campus tour organizer asked for space for a speech on May 4. But the university in northern Ohio says in a statement released Thursday that the first two weeks of May are a busy time on campus because it's the end of the academic year.
