State Department issues travel alert to U.S. citizens

The alert urges travelers to be aware of surroundings when traveling and to avoid crowded places.

(RNN) - The State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert for U.S. citizens.

The alert, which cautions "U.S. citizens to possible risks of travel due to increased terrorist threats," runs through Feb. 24, 2016.

The State Department says current information indicates terror groups like the Islamic State and al Qaeda are planning terror attacks.

It did not specify where or when attacks may be conducted. The attacks "may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons" the alert said.

The alert urges travelers to be aware of surroundings and avoid crowded places.

Travelers are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which allows U.S. citizens to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. embassy.

Enrolling can help the embassy and family and friends to get in touch with a traveler in case of an emergency. You can sign up at: http://step.state.gov/step/.

You can read the alert in its entirety here.
