TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo family has been thrown into the national spotlight after 10-year-old Ivan Applin, a huge Ohio State fan, expressed concern that having a much needed heart surgery at the University of Michigan would cause him to bleed maize and blue, rather than scarlet and gray.

"My main thing is that I want to teach him about god, give him a family and make him a Buckeye,” said Ivan’s mom Jennifer Applin.

Ivan joined his family when he was six years old after being adopted in Russia. His parents knew he had a hole in his heart that would grew as he did.

“Thankfully, they told us about this new procedure where they could go through his groin and they wouldn’t have to open him up, very simple,” said Jennifer.

Jennifer was interviewed for U of M's blog about that new procedure. That’s where she mentioned the unique concern her son had.

“When I told him he would be having this procedure, he immediately associated his heart with love. And being a big Ohio State fan, he was afraid we were going to make him love Michigan because he was having the procedure done at U of M,” said Jennifer.

The surgery happened Aug. 3 and went great. Ivan is back to school and still a Buckeye fan. In the last 24 hours, his story has gone viral. From social media to ESPN, everyone is learning about this insightful little boy who is enjoying the fame.

“He said that's fine, I’m okay with being famous,” said Jennifer.

Ivan has never been to an OSU game. His mom says the family watches every game on TV and cheers them on. He's hoping his new found fame will help him reunite with his two sisters who were also adopted in Russia and are somewhere in the United States.
