Swim advisory lifted along Lake Erie coast after community test shows no microcystin

It was all fun and games Monday at East Harbor State Park, until beach-goers learned of a swim advisory just a few miles away due to detected microcystin.

(Toledo News Now) - It was all fun and games Monday at East Harbor State Park, until beach-goers learned of a swim advisory just a few miles away due to detected microcystin.

"It makes me really uncomfortable. I just want to enjoy the day with my family and I don't want to have to worry about our health," said Halie Peterson.

"I think they should probably test this water too, being that it's not safe down the road and it's in the same close area," said Taylor Topel.

The swim advisory on Lakeside Chautauqua was lifted around 3 p.m. Monday after the Lakeside Chautauqua community provided their own test, which showed no signs of microcystin.

A representative with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says because a bloom was not spotted at East Harbor State Park, no advisory was posted. They say the microcystin cannot travel outside the perimeter of the bloom. They have however, been working with the Lakeside community to keep an eye on the bloom and it's travel path.

Still beach-goers prefer not to take their chances.

"I think we should have the option if we chose to swim or not and avoid the doctors' bills later on," said Sharlene Otto

The ODNR does plan to test the water for precaution.
