DETROIT, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Detroit Red Wings have a new head coach. T-Sports reporter Jordan Strack heard from Jeff Blashill himself on the move.

Blashill spent time on Mike Babcock's staff and the last few seasons he was the head coach in Grand Rapids.

He says becoming the head coach for the Red Wings is a challenge he is ready for now. Five NHL teams contacted the Red Wings last off season, hoping to lure Blashill away, but he says this was the job he wanted.

“I've gone through lots of different experiences in my coaching career. The readiness factor for me is ‘I know I'm ready now.' That doesn't mean... I still have to execute every day. I don't care if you've been coaching this league for 20 years, or in my case this is my first chance to be head coach, you have to execute, I'm going to have to execute,” said Blashill.

“Mike Babcock somehow found Blashill four years ago and after spending four years watching Blashill I don't think there is anybody out there who is more ready or more prepared to coach the Red Wings than Jeff Blashill,” said Ken Holland, general manager for the Detroit Red Wings.

So, now that Blashill is headed to Detroit, head coach of the Toledo Walleye Derek Lalonde is a candidate for the Grand Rapids job Blashill will be leaving behind.

"Derek Lalonde knows he is one of the candidates. This week, today, tomorrow and Thursday we're interviewing three or four more candidates. And then probably Thursday night or Friday night Ryan Martin and I will sit and compare notes as we've gone through the interview process and we will decide if we want to make a decision or if we want to double back and maybe meet one or two of them a second time," said Holland.

"Derek is an excellent coach who is ready for an opportunity, the opportunity has to be there, but I think he is ready. I think Derek has done a great job. He did a great job this season. I thought the players that came up from Toledo were absolutely ready for us. With that said, he'll get his opportunity at some point for sure, but when it is who knows, those aren't my decisions to make. I know he has proven himself a great coach," said Blashill.
