Community members speak on marriage equality resolution

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo City Council officially passed a resolution Tuesday supporting marriage equality and the work of 'Why Marriage Matters Ohio,' a grass-roots organization.

The city now joins six other Ohio cities in passing their support. For community members involved in marriage equality support groups, it's been a long time coming.

"People of Toledo that identify as LGBT have been looking forward to this ruling for a very long time," said Nicholas Komives, Chair of Equality Toledo.

He says supporting marriage equality and groups like 'Why Marriage Matters Ohio' and 'Equality Toledo' is crucial.

"It'll send a really strong symbolic message that the City of Toledo is welcoming to LGBT people and the idea of a true marriage equality and freedom for all people to be married," he said.

The City of Toledo is second to Lucas County in showing its support for marriage equality.

Groups that are in favor of moving forward with larger legislation on the issue say there's more work to be done.

"There's no doubt that there's plenty of legislation that could be passed in favor of LGBT people both locally and throughout the state," said Komives.

Komives also says in recent years, as conversations on the topic evolve, there has been less and less opposition.

He commends Toledo City Council for their action on the issue, but says action on a national level is really what supporters are looking for.

"I think it's important to recognize that there are many factors that negatively impact the LGBT community and anything that can be done is a step in the right direction, but this is certainly not over," he said.
