TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The local firefighters' union president has requested an internal investigation after a petition was circulated following the release of a federal report.
A report released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) revealed missteps taken during the north Toledo fire that killed Privates Stephen Machcinski and Jamie Dickman. In the wake of the report, a petition showing support for Chief Luis Santiago was circulated.
Now Local 92 President Jeff Romstadt says the fact that a lieutenant and deputy chief in the department were circulating the petition while on duty, that may have placed pressure on firefighters to sign it.
The petition summary explains that it opposes comments made by Romstadt after he blamed Santiago for the firefighters' deaths.
Fire department administrative staff and officers signed the petition, along with firefighters.
Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld with the department says there is not currently an investigation. The Office of Internal Affairs said they could not comment on if a formal request was made.
