How to avoid donation scams

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Before you donate to charity you might want to make sure you know where that money is going. The Better Business Bureau says they're getting complaints about donation scams going on around our area. These scams are more common than you might think. Experts say it's important to do your research before you send your money anywhere.

Dick Eppstein with the Better Business Bureau calls it heartbreaking when people find out money they thought was going to help a good cause goes to waste.

“I've talked to people who have donated thousands of dollars to these charities and they have no idea that most of their money was wasted. The problem with charity scams is there are so many charities and people don't know which one they're giving to,” said Eppstein.

He says the BBB gets a number of complaints about look-alike charities. These organizations use key words like ‘cancer,' ‘veteran,' or ‘wish' and pose as other well known organizations.

“Verify the address, check with us, and we'll look it up for you to make sure it's who you think it is,” said Eppstein.

He says it's also good to do a little research on the charity even if you have heard of it before. Check to see just how much of your donation helps the cause. If it's less than 65 percent, Eppstein recommends you donate elsewhere.

“We encourage people to give, we want you all to donate that's a good thing; but for heaven's sake make sure you know who you're giving to,” said Eppstein.

If you have questions about a charity you're interested in donating to, check with the BBB. They have a list of the best ones in our area.
