FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) - A popular gun club and shooting range in Findlay has announced it will be closing its doors due to nearby expanding land development.
Last year, the City of Findlay annexed 150 acres of farmland to establish the new Tall Timbers West industrial park. They left 28 remaining acres owned by The Jaqua's Gun Shop on Bigelow Avenue untouched.
“In order for them to continue to shoot last summer, we had to leave that other part out of the annexation,” explained Hancock County Economic Development Director Tony Iriti.
On Thursday, the Hancock County Commissioners approved the annexation of those 28 acres. The City of Findlay must wait 60 days before voting on the annexation. If approved, the land will be purchased from Jaqua's.
The gun shop, established in 1946, will remain open, but with encroaching industry, it's impossible to safety continue the operations of the Jaqua's Gun Club and shooting range.
Iriti says if things go well, there could be one or two new deals finalized for the industrial complex this year, and there are already buyers interested in the newly-annexed land.
"Currently we have some interest in it, so we're hoping that transaction will take place shortly after," he said.
Owners of Jaqua's were not ready to comment on the situation, but employees of the shop said they didn't know of any plans to relocate the shooting range.
