Grand jury indicts former Holland daycare employee on rape charge

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Lucas County grand jury has indicted a former Holland daycare center employee on one count of rape after the sheriff's office says he admitted to raping a 6-year-old at the daycare.

Cody Champagne, 23, was charged Monday with one count of rape. The Lucas County Sheriff's Office says he worked as a teacher's assistant at the Children's Discovery Center on Timberwolf Drive in Holland from September of 2013 until he was arrested.

The sheriff's office says the child involved told his or her mother about the rape, and the mother alerted the school.

Children's Discovery Center CEO Lois Rosenberry says they follow all state requirements for background checks and have a lengthy interview process. Like every other employee there, Champagne passed two interviews, and in-class evaluation, medical evaluation and background checks conducted by the FBI and BCI.

The CEO says they are taking immediate action to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Champagne was indicted Thursday. His arraignment will be scheduled within the next couple days.
