TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The widow of late Mayor D. Michael Collins Sandy Drabik and other family members were presented an American flag flown on the USS Toledo at Saturday night's Toledo Walleye Hockey game.
Walleye fans gave a couple of standing ovations as the flag that had flown on the USS Toledo submarine on February 18 was handed over to Drabik and the Collins family.
“It's just a tremendous honor,” said Drabik. “I know they're remembering his marine service, which was so dear to him, and his public service. And as a family we are so grateful.”
Following the death of Mayor Collins on February 6, the United States military felt it was important to honor a man who had so much of an impact on the his community.
“This is an opportunity not only to tell the Mayor's family thank you for his service to the United States Marines, thank you for his service as a public servant, but more importantly, thank you for the service of this great City of Toledo,” said Lt. Haraz Ghanbari with the United States Navy.
The night was especially significant because it was Irish night at the Walleye game, heritage Mayor Collins was very proud of.
