Paulding Co. farm fire kills hundreds of pigs

PAULDING COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) - Nearly 400 pigs were killed over the weekend in Paulding County when a barn went up in flames.

380 hogs and piglets died in Sunday's fire at Cooper Farms White Oak location in Grover Hill on Road 165.  Farm workers say they're devastated.

“This is very saddening, it's very upsetting to everyone involved especially I could think of the managers and team members who work on this farm,” said Cassie Jo Arend, Communications Coordinator with Cooper Farms. “It's definitely upsetting to them, it's a hard loss.”

The 400 by 75 foot wood framed barn house was filled with sows and their piglets.

“You can almost think about that building as sort of the hospital room where the moms and babies stay right after they have them,” said Arend. “They were there after just giving birth, they're there until the babies are weaned.”

Investigators are still trying to figure out how this fire started.  Cooper Farm officials say they will rebuild the barn.
