EDITORIAL: Talking with D. Michael Collins

(Toledo News Now) - Much has been said about Mayor D. Michael Collins. His untimely passing caused me to reflect on the times we talked. His topic was always the same: He wanted to make sure I understood how he planned to make Toledo a better place.

He talked at length about the significance of moving ProMedica downtown. He was immensely proud of his role in making this happen. He was convinced this was the bold stroke downtown needed to change its course.

We talked about Jeep. He was willing to do whatever it took to keep the Wrangler production in town. He was right about that. We agreed he should remind people every day that Jeep and Toledo were synonyms. Jeep and Toledo - we build it here.

He agreed that the historic negativity that pervades and poisons this town needed to just be ignored. He was right about that, too.

Mike was right about a lot of stuff, but mostly he was right about believing in the power to make things better. He was decent and humble and singularly focused on making this a better place. I guess we didn't appreciate those qualities as much as we should have. It won't take long to realize how much he will be missed.

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
