TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - It has been almost a year since Toledo lost firefighters Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman in the line of duty, fighting a fire in north Toledo last January. Now plans are already in motion to honor their sacrifice.
Toledoans are planning to show firefighters in Toledo that they will never forget those lost and those that serve the community by providing them with warm meals for an entire week.
“These guys wake up ever morning and put their lives on the line for us, and for me to take a couple weeks out of my time to do something, to show them some love, I'm happy to do it,” said organizer Larry Cready.
So, Cready decided to launch an effort to give every firehouse a warm meal for an entire week beginning on Monday, the anniversary of Steve and Jamie's death.
“They're kind of humble and right now is a sad time for them, they are glad to see the community coming together again and I think really deep down inside they really appreciate it, we all know they do,” said Cready.
He says the effort is called A WEEK OF FEAST - DINNERS FOR THE DEPARTMENT and there's an online sign up form to make sure every firehouse in town gets one meal a day.
“There is a lot of availability. We need a lot of help to make this really work. I would ask people that are going to help us out, start with Monday, lets get Monday filled up, move to Tuesday, and lets go that direction so we don't have any spaces or are missing anything,” said Cready.
There are still several openings for the week at every firehouse. If you would like to volunteer and bring a dish
. To find the meal plan type in TFRD for the coordinator's last name and 2015 for the password. Then pick a station. That will allow you to see the station location, how many firefighters there are to feed and the date and dish.
