Don't Waste Your Money: Most popular gift this season going unused

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - One of the most popular gifts this holiday season often turns out to be the most wasted gift.

Gift cards are now a $30 billion business, but unfortunately many go unused.

Consumers love the easiness of a gift card, but a new report by Mitch Lipka of DailyFinance.com says once to give one as a gift it may be the last that card is ever seen.

According to the report, common gift card downsides include; stores the recipient rarely shops at or is too far away, inactivity fees that eat away at the card's value, lost cards, and forgotten cards.

And the biggest gift card downside, the store or restaurant goes out of business before the recipient of that gift card even uses it, making that card worthless.

Daily Finance says to beware of gift cards from businesses that are new or no longer very popular because that card may last longer than the business itself.

Bottom line; read the fine print and make sure the recipient can easily use it so it doesn't get thrown away and you don't waste your money.
